Witnessing the Massacre
In my role as a visual journalist, I have witnessed Rabaa massacre, one of the worst cases of mass killing in the history of Egypt.
As time passes on, the memory of the bloody event never goes away but beliefs are changing. The public mind is maturing and the vision seems to get clearer. Since the military coup in Egypt by military chief Abdelfatah Elsisi, the Egyptian government has spent billions of pounds building 26 prisons to be able to contain over 65 thousands political prisoners, including dozens of journalists. There have also been thousands of cases of disappearance cases, extrajudicial killings, and 3000 death sentence verdicts issued by the courts.
I have covered protests of both supporters and opposition to ousted president Mohamed Morsy, as well as the violence that security forces launched on his supporters. Thousands have been killed during that period, including over 800 people in the Rabaa massacre. These images are a documentation of those events.
